10 Bakeries You Have to Visit

Take the ultimate sweet treat and baked good tour through Northern Michigan when you stay at a Boyneland Rental! It’s no secret that we have an incredible selection of bakeries and eateries in Boyne City and the other local towns in our area.

If you follow along on our Instagram, @boyneland, you know that we love a good baked good – or really any sweet treat.

Here’s a roundup of 10 of our favorite places to frequent. We obviously recommend trying every single one while you’re in the area. If you don’t have time to visit each one, you can’t go wrong with any of these spots!

Gilda’s Bakery

Picture from Gilda’s Lake Street Bakery Website

  • Website: https://www.gildaslakestreetbakery.com

  • Address: 110 S. Lake Street Boyne City, MI 49712

Located within walking distance of many of our rentals, Gilda’s Bakery is a great spot to head in the mornings for a fresh pastry. They have a wide assortment of pastries including crepes, cinnamon rolls, delicious breads, scones, muffins and more. If you need something more substantial, they also have quiches and sandwiches. Chef Gilda is originally from France, so each delicious bite that you have will reflect his training from growing up there. A fun fact about Chef Gilda is that the French Crepe originated in Brittany, France, where he was raised.

If you want to combine two of our favorite morning spots, head to Gilda’s Bakery for a delicious pastry and then walk down (approximately 200 feet – neighbor spots) to Lake Charlevoix Coffee Company for a delicious coffee! It’s the perfect way to start any day while you are in Boyne City.

Gilda’s Bakery does have morning hours and is not open daily. Be sure to check their website for current hours that they are open before walking down.

JoJo's Cookie Co

  • Website: https://jojoscookiecompany.com

  • Address: 2611 Charlevoix Ave Petoskey MI 49770

JoJo’s Cookie Co is a spot that you cannot miss while staying at a Boyneland Rental. Their tagline, “Smiles From Scratch” is 100% true – our mouths are watering just thinking about our next visit. We can’t even tell you which one is the best because they are all simply amazing. Loaded S’more, Monster, Triple Chip, and Not Your Mama’s Peanut Butter – these are just a few of the incredible options that they have!

JoJo’s Cookie Co has 10 classic flavors that are always on the menu. Then, they have six rotating flavors each month. We try to stop in each time the menu changes (okay, maybe more than that, but who is counting!) We are JoJo’s Cookie regulars and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Currently closed on Mondays, but open every other day, this is a stop worth making!

Petoskey Pretzel

Website: https://www.petoskeypretzelco.com

Address: 200 Petoskey St Petoskey, MI

A local favorite, Petoskey Pretzel is a must while in the area. These pretzels are freshly made daily! They dough is made in house, hand rolled from scratch each day, using all natural American-made ingredients. These pretzels are so delicious they truly melt in your mouth.

On top of offering the most delicious buttery original pretzel, they also offer a sweet cinnamon sugar that makes a great dessert! Pair the cinnamon sugar pretzel with their cream cheese spread or a hot fudge dip for the perfect sweet treat. If you want a savory and more substantial pretzel, try the Pretzel Frankfurter, Pepperoni Pretza or a Cheese Pretza. We love the Pepperoni Pretza – pepperoni and mozzarella cheese wrapped in their house-made pretzel dough.

Petoskey Pretzel is located right next to The Tunnel entrance to Bayfront Park and the Little Traverse Wheelway. We love to grab a pretzel (or two!) for each of us and head down to the Bayfront Playground or go for a walk or bike ride on the Little Traverse Wheelway. It’s the perfect afternoon activity for your family and a great way to be outside and spend time on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. They are currently open daily!

Tom’s Mom’s Cookies

Voted Best Cookie by the “Official Best of Michigan” TV program, featured on Food Network’s “Food Finds” Program and countless other places, Tom’s Mom’s Cookies are award winning cookies that have been making people smile since 1985. Each cookie weighs 3 oz – truly a delectable treat! There are quite a few different flavors that they offer –chocolate, caramel and pretzel, classic chocolate, chocolate and dried cherries and chocolate peanut butter. You cannot go wrong with any of their flavors – we know that you won’t be able to choose just one! When you stop in to try their cookies, we always recommend stocking up – their cookies freeze perfectly for you to take home quite a few and have them later when you need something sweet to eat!

Open year round (except for 3 holidays) these are cookies that you really want to try! A question they are asked a lot – who is Tom’s Mom? You’ll be surprised to find out that’s a secret that no one knows the answer too!

Located in Downtown Harbor Springs, this is such a cute town to walk around while you are visiting Tom’s Mom’s Cookies. Harbor Springs also has a few other bakeries that you can visit while in the town of Harbor Springs, like My Sister’s Bake Shop and Small Batch Bakery. We know you can make the perfect day trip out of this cute Northern Michigan town!

Crooked Tree Breadworks

Picture from Crooked Tree Breadworks’ Website

Stop in for Crooked Tree Breadworks for an amazing selection of daily fresh baked breads, muffins, scones, cookies, croissants, granola and more! This bakery is more on the savory side than sweet, with so many delicious homemade offerings.

Visiting Crooked Tree Breadworks for a fresh loaf of bread is a must. We love their classic sourdough bread, but the rustic baguette is also wonderful. Their muffins and scones are also incredibly delicious – it all is! The muffins and scones range from savory to sweet. There is something for everyone in your group. If you enjoy granola, pick up some of their Addictive Granola to have with yogurt – it’s made of toasted nuts, dried Michigan cherries, raisins, real maple syrup, and honey. A treat that we love to take home with us!

Having fresh baked bread in your Boyneland Airbnb each morning is such a luxury for vacation – definitely make this a stop early in your trip! While you are visiting Crooked Tree Breadworks, it’s the perfect opportunity to bike the Little Traverse Wheelway or visit Petoskey State Park. Petoskey State Park features a one milke beach on Lake Michigan and also has some small hiking trails. We love hiking the Petoskey – Old Baldy Trail. It’s a short half mile trail that goes up stairs to the top of Old Baldy. It gives incredible views of Lake Michigan. It’s also the perfect hike to take before settling on the beach to eat your fresh bread and pastries from Crooked Tree Breadworks.

They are open six days a week, except for Sundays.

That French Place

That French Place is located in Downtown Charlevoix, a very cute quintessential Northern Michigan town that is about twenty minutes from Boyne City, situated between Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. If you’ve never been, you need to add the entire town to your list of places to explore! That French Place is a gem of a bakery. Featuring coffee, tea, crepes, pastries, cookies, quiche and more, this is one of our favorite bakeries! Their extensive list of sweet and savory crepes is truly impressive. They have over twenty-five different flavors. Two of our favorite crepes include the savory Ham, Egg and Swiss or the Local Maple Syrup. One thing we love about their crepes is they package them like you would eat them in Paris – in a crepe cone. That way you can walk through town while you enjoy it, if you wanted to!.

They also have incredible pastries like Vanilla Honey Madeleines, Cream Puffs, Macarons and more delicious treats. We love that it’s a one stop shop with the coffee offerings, too. That French Place is owned by a husband and wife team, Brian and Emily. We love supporting local family-owned businesses! Check their website for opening hours before stopping by!
